HAMILTON, Ontario – David Choiniere’s goal in the 90+1’ earned Canada’s Forge FC a 2-1 victory over Antigua GFC of Guatemala in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League Preliminary Round on Thursday night at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.
It marks the first ever win for a Canadian Premier League club in a Concacaf club competition.
Antigua GFC had the better start of the two and opened the scoring in the 33’ through Edgar Pacheco, whose initial free kick was blocked, only for his volley off the rebound to go blazing into the Forge FC net for a 1-0 Antigua GFC lead.
The reaction from the home side was almost immediate, as just a minute into the second half, Daniel Krutzen became the first ever CPL player to score a goal in a Concacaf club competition with a nice finish off a corner kick from Kyle Bekker to make it all square 1-1.
Both sides looked to find a late winner and in the first minute of second half stoppage time, Choiniere would do the honors by chesting a Kwame Awuah pass and poking home the game-winning goal for Forge FC.
