GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Guatemala posted a 1-0 win over visiting Cuba in an international friendly on Saturday at the Estadio Mateo Flores.

It was the host’s second victory in 10 days, following a 3-0 triumph over Nicaragua on August 14 that snapped a 13-game winless streak.

In a match played as part of the Chapines’ preparations for next month’s Copa Centroamericana, Gregory Lester Ruiz struck for the game-winning goal in the 61st minute.

The Coatepeque standout started the sequence with a neat back-heel pass to Carlos Mejia, who then found Brandon de Leon.  After De Leon was jammed by Cuban defender Renay Malblanche, the ball was left for Ruiz to finish.

Guatemala will open its Copa Centroamericana campaign against El Salvador on September 3 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C.
