KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup - the region’s biennial championship for national teams that also serves as a qualifying competition for the CONCACAF Gold Cup – launched its 2014 edition on Friday with preliminary round matches in Aruba and Montserrat.  Both hosts came away winners, as did French Guiana.

Here’s a recap of the evening’s action:

GROUP 1 (at Lookout, Montserrat)
At Blakes Estate Stadium, Montserrat – in its first home match in more than 10 years – posted a 1-0 victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jaylee Hodgson netted the game’s only goal in the 54th minute to lift the Montserratians into first place.  The English-born forward, 33, had scored three goals in two World Cup qualifiers against Belize in 2011.

GROUP 2 (at Oranjestad, Aruba)
In the opener at the Complejo Deportivo Guillermo Prospero Trinidad, French Guiana got goals from six different players to top the British Virgin Islands, 6-0.

Anthony Sourberve opened the scoring on a 17th minute penalty kick, while Gabriel Pigree (50’), Sergillo Atooman (53’), Fabrice Awong (55’), Michael Solvi (81’) and Orpheo Nalie (90’+2) all netted after the break.

Host Aruba closed out the evening with a 1-0 win over the Turks & Caicos Islands 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Emile Linkers in the 28th minute.
