Third-round play in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup opened Wednesday with a pair games, while two others – Jamaica-Suriname and Haiti-French Guiana – were postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.
The day was highlighted by a three-goal performance from Kevin Molino in Trinidad & Tobago’s 4-0 win over the Dominican Republic.
CONCACAF.com takes a look at the action from the Caribbean’s qualifying competition for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Group 3 … Curacao won for a fourth straight time in the Caribbean Cup, scoring once early and twice late in a 3-0 win over visiting Antigua & Barbuda. Leandro Bacuna gave the Curacaoans a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Antigua held on until the final 10 minutes of the game, when Rangelo Janga (80’); Gino van Kessel (90’) each struck to complete the scoreline. Van Kessel’s goal was his tournament-best seventh. Neither side has ever qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Group 4 … Kevin Molino was, once again, a thorn in the Dominican Republic’s side. The Orlando City SC standout netted three goals (14’, 18’, 55’) in Trinidad & Tobago’s 4-0 victory, taking his all-time Caribbean Cup total against the Dominicans to seven. In the 2012 edition, Molino struck once in a 2-1 win and, nearly two years ago in the same stadium (Ato Boldon Stadium), he found the back of three times in a 6-1 triumph. T&T’s other goal on Wednesday came via Cordell Cato, who made it 3-0 in the 30th minute by capitalizing on miscommunication between defender Cesar Garcia and goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd for a simple finish.
