SUWON, Korea Republic – Despite dropping a 1-0 decision to first-place Venezuela (3W-0D-0L, 9 points) on Friday at Suwon World Cup Stadium, Mexico (1-1-1, 4) claimed a Round of 16 place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The Mexicans finished second in Group B, edging Germany (1-1-1, 4) on goal difference (0 to -1).

Sergio Cordova scored the game’s only goal in the 33rd minute, when he brought down an Adalberto Peñaranda pass in the box and held off defender Edson Alvarez, before beating goalkeeper Abraham Romero from an unkind angle three-yards out.

In the next round, Mexico will meet the second-place finisher from Group F, which contains the United States, Senegal, Saudi Arabia and Ecuador.
