Past, present CONCACAF youth stars poised to take U.S. forward

CARSON, California – As the United States resets after missing out on a berth in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, it will be looking at the next generation of talent to lead the way, especially those players with past experience in CONCACAF youth tournaments.

Some of them participated in a recent United States training camp and Sunday’s 0-0 draw with visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina.

CONCACAF.com takes a look at some of the personnel possibilities from that get-together:

Tyler Adams / MF, New York Red Bulls (18):  made his full international debut in 1-1 draw at Portugal in November, 2017 … standout player in the 2017 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship and the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup … played in three games in the 2015 FIFA U-17 Word Cup … appeared in three career Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) games.

Danny Acosta / DF, Real Salt Lake (20): member of 2017 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship title-winning squad … played in all five games in 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Paul Arriola / MF, D.C. United (22): netted goal in USA’s 2-0 win over El Salvador in the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, a result that gave the Americans a spot in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup … part of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning side.

Cody Cropper / GK, New England Revolution (24): member of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship sides in 2011 and 2013, helping the U.S. finish second in the latter.

Justen Glad / DF, Real Salt Lake (20): competed in the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 and 2017 Under-20 Championships, earning Best XI accolades in the latter … at 17, started in a 2015/16 SCCL game.

Brooks Lennon / MF, Real Salt Lake (20): earned Best XI honors for his outstanding play in the USA’s run to 2017 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship title, scoring four goals … went on to net twice in five 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup games.

Cristian Roldan / MF, Seattle Sounders FC (22): made full international debut in 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Kelyn Rowe / MF, New England Revolution (26): competed in the 2011 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship … scored one goal in two games in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Rubio Rubin / FW, no club (22): competed in 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship

Zach Steffen / GK, Columbus Crew (22): helped the U.S. to a third-place finish at the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, producing a penalty save in an upset of Columbia in the Round of 16 at the U-20 World Cup. 

Wil Trapp / MF. Columbus Crew SC (25): named to the 2013 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship Best XI.
