GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Guatemalan power Comunicaciones announced Wednesday that it has signed Nicaragua international Juan Barrera.
The 26-year-old midfielder revealed a week earlier that he parted ways by mutual agreement with SC Rheindorf Altach. Barrera became the first Nicaraguan to play in Europe after he joined the Austrian club during the summer, making two appearances in both the domestic league and the UEFA Europa League.
Prior to the current season, Barrera won multiple Nicaraguan titles over the course of three spells with Real Esteli from 2005-15, while also suiting up for Walter Ferretti (Nicaragua), Tauro FC (Panama) and Deportivo Petare (Venezuela).
With Nicaragua, he appeared in three games at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup and has scored two goals in eight all-time World Cup qualifiers.
Comunicaciones had won six straight Guatemalan league titles prior to falling to eventual champion Antigua GFC in the semifinals of the recently completed 2015 Apertura season.
