SAN FRANCISCO, California - The Mexican national team will face Peru on Wednesday in a friendly at Candlestick Park using a roster composed of domestic-based players, including four each from Cruz Azul and Club America.
It will be El Tri's last game before commencing a busy schedule that consists of another friendly against Nigeria on May 31 in Houston, three World Cup qualifiers (June 4 at Jamaica, June 7 at Panama, June 11 v Costa Rica), the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil (June 15-30) and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States (July 7-28).
"It is a game of preparation (against Peru), we have always seen it in the same way, it is to prepare for what is coming, that's how I've always seen it and that is how I have always explained it," said Mexico head coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.
The Tricolor chief called on his players to use Wednesday's game as an occasion to show what they can contribute as important games quickly approach.
"It's an opportunity that we must seize, some players are returning to this level, others are given the opportunity under the circumstances and other people have done well, then, we do not know what will happen in about a month and we have to provide for certain circumstances with players who have done well.
"We are preparing for the qualifying games, then after that comes the Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup. From all of this, we must be attentive to the players that we can use."
Mexico has 11 wins and six draws in 26 previous outing against Peru. They last met on July 8, 2011, at the Copa America in Mendoza, Argentina, a game that ended in a 1-0 win for the South Americans.
