RENTON, Washington -- The Seattle Sounders used their No. 1 selection in Major League Soccer’s Allocation Ranking Order on Friday to acquire Guatemala international Marco Pappa.

Earlier this month, the midfielder was released by Heerenveen after making only 12 appearances in less than two years with the Dutch side.

“Marco is a proven and established player who has been very productive in this league,” said Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson.  “He has the technical quality to create chances for himself and his teammates at any moment.  Marco has been able to adapt his game to the International level.  He is a high-character guy who brings excitement and quality to our midfield.”

A previous MLS stint with the Chicago Fire from 2008-12, yielded Pappa 26 goals in 112 matches.

In 30 internationals for Guatemala, the 26-year-old has netted five goals, including three in 15 World Cup qualifiers.

Pappa is scheduled to join Seattle for preseason training in Tucson, Arizona.
