Costly receives call-up for key Honduras WCQs

Carlo Costly (white jersey), shown competing for Olimpia in a recent Scotiabank CONCACAF League game against Alajuelense, has not played in a World Cup qualifier for Honduras since March 29, 2016.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Honduras head coach Jorge Luis Pinto announced Friday a 30-man roster for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago (September 1, away) and the United States (September 5, home).

The Catrachos sit fifth in the CONCACAF Hexagonal with five points from six games, three points behind the third-place USA for the region’s last automatic qualifying spot at Russia 2018.

One of the surprise inclusions was 35-year-old forward Carlo Costly, who has scored 13 goals in 30 all-time qualifiers, but has appeared only once during the current campaign.  Costly netted twice in Olimpia’s 3-1 win over Alianza on Thursday night, helping the Leones advance to 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League semifinals, 3-2 on aggregate.

Another forward, Spain-based Antony Lozano, also merited selection.  The 24-year-old scored in his debut for Barcelona B on August 19, a 2-1 win over host Valladolid in the Segunda A Division.

Honduras will convene on Sunday for the start of a training camp in San Pedro Sula.
