MIAMI, Florida – Club America punched their ticket to the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals despite a 1-0 defeat to CD Olimpia of Honduras in their Round of 16 second leg on Wednesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.

A 2-1 victory in Honduras for the Mexican giants combined with Wednesday night’s result resulted in a 2-2 final on aggregate, with Las Aguilas advancing on the away goal tiebreaker.

Starting the match in need of two goals, Olimpia came out very aggressive and nearly tallied an early goal in the 16’ when an Edwin Rodriguez free kick was headed onto the crossbar by Yustin Arboleda.

Olimpia continued to mount pressure and Arboleda was knocking on the door again in the 28’, but was unable to get a clean shot on target against Club America GK Guillermo Ochoa.

Club America were finding chances as well and it took the post to prevent Federico Vinas from scoring the opener via header.

Olimpia hung tough and an inch-perfect cross from Arboleda reached the outstretched foot of Jerry Bengtson, who finished to earn the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 50’.

Club America sought to regain control in midfield and used possession to limit Olimpia’s chances the rest of the way to secure their spot in the next round.
