One of 10 charter members of Major League Soccer, the New York Red Bulls are making their second appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League after capturing the 2013 MLS Supporters Shield. The squad was knocked out of the 2009/10 CCL in the Preliminary Round by Trinidad & Tobago’s W Connection, 4-3 on aggregate. Originally known as the MetroStars, the team was bought by Austrian-based energy drink company Red Bull in 2006. Coached by former standout defender Mike Petke, the Red Bulls feature legendary French World Cup champion Thierry Henry as well as current internationals Tim Cahill (Australia) and defender Roy Miller (Costa Rica), who both competed in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Red Bulls compete in 25,000-seat Red Bull Arena, known as one of the top soccer-specific stadiums in the United States. They have been drawn into Group 3 with MLS rival Impact de Montreal (Canada) and FAS (El Salvador).
