Founded in 1960, Real Esteli is the most successful club in recent Nicaraguan football history, achieving unparalleled success both domestically and internationally. “El Tren del Norte” (The Train of the North) is making its fifth CONCACAF Champions League appearance this year. Though it has never won in the competition, 10 of its 12 all-time games through the 2013/14 edition have been decided by one goal or less. On September 18, 2012, Esteli was close to posting a famous victory over Mexico’s Tigres, when Jorge Espericueta struck for an 89th minute equalizer in a 1-1 draw. The club is managed by Otoniel Olivas, who is in his second stint after having previously coached the squad from 2002-09. He also managed Nicaragua from 2009-10. Real Esteli will face Sporting Kansas City (USA) and Saprissa (Costa Rica) in Group 2 play.
