KOBE, Japan - Mexico advanced to the quarterfinals of the Under-20 Women's World Cup on Sunday, getting four second-half goals to beat New Zealand 4-0 and reach the knockout round for the second straight time.
Sofia Huerta scored for the third consecutive game, giving Mexico the lead in the 47th minute by capitalizing on a defensive lapse.
Natalia Gomez scored with a header to double the lead, and Yamile Franco and Olivia Jimenez also added insurance strikes - all in the final 16 minutes -- to complete the victory.
The win finished Mexico in second place in Group A with six points, one behind group winner Japan, and two ahead of New Zealand, which was eliminated. It sent the Mexicans to a Thursday quarterfinal against Group B winner Nigeria.
