MIYAGI, Japan - Sofia Huerta scored for a second straight match and Olivia Jimenez added an injury time strike to give Mexico a 2-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday and revive its hopes at the Under-20 Women's World Cup.
The result gave Mexico three points after two games in Group A, one point behind both Japan and New Zealand, who played to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday. Mexico still must play New Zealand on Sunday. Two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Huerta put Mexico ahead in the first minute after the second-half kickoff, settling a long ball from out of the back by Arianna Romero, out pacing defender Lia Waelti into the penalty area and finishing with a right-footed drive.
Carmen Pulver had an opportunity to equalize for Switzerland, getting behind the Mexican defense but keeper Cecilia Santiago blocked her shot with her right shoulder.
Huerta assured Mexico's victory in the 91st minute, taking a ball in her own half, dribbling within 40 meters of Switzerland's goal and unleashing an arcing, right-footed effort that eluded diving keeper Pascale Keuffer high inside the right post.
