BAKU, Azerbaijan - The United States held North Korea to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, but was eliminated from the Under-17 Women's World Cup on goal difference when France routed Gambia 10-2.
The results left North Korea, France and the United States with five points atop Group B, but sent the Asians (plus-11) and the Europeans (plus-eight) to the quarterfinals with superior goal differences over the CONCACAF champion (plus-six).
Darian Jenkins gave the United States the lead in the second minute, heading in at the back post a cross from Amber Munerlyn.
But the Koreans equalized only 72 seconds later - eight seconds faster than France had done to North Korea four days earlier - when Ri Un Sim took a cross from Jon So Yon, settled it off her chest, turned and scored past U.S. keeper Jane Campbell.
North Korea had the better of play the rest of the way, outshooting the United States 22-10, including 8-1 on goal.
But the United States had a chance to win the game in the 86th, only to see Morgan Andrews' free kick from 40 meters hit the crossbar.
