ARIMA, Trinidad - Haisha Cantave scored in the 54th minute to give Canada a 1-0 victory over Ghana on Monday in the opening game for both at the Under-17 Women's World Cup.
Cantave leapt to head in a corner kick against the run of play to give the CONCACAF champion a share of the Group D lead along with Brazil.
The Africans outshot Canada 15-4, forcing Canadian keeper Sabrina D'Angelo into several saves - including a diving effort on a chance by Alice Danso in the 18th minute, but produced little dangerous after allowing Cantave's goal.
Canada is looking to at least match its 2008 appearance. It reached the quarterfinals with a victory and two draws, scoring only two goals, before being eliminated by Germany.
The North Americans next face Ireland on Thursday, when Ghana plays Brazil.
