PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Diarra Simmons scored nine minutes after the opening kickoff and host Trinidad & Tobago subdued Chile 2-1 on Sunday to open the Under-17 Women's World Cup.

CONCACAF also suffered a lopsided defeat with Lena Petermann and Kyra Malinowski scoring three goals apiece to pace Germany to a 9-0 rout over Mexico in Scarborough, Tobago.

Liana Hinds doubled Trinidad's lead in the 80th minute before Iona Rothfield pulled Chile within a goal three minutes later.

The Soca Princesses, who have never played in a U-17 Women's World Cup and qualified for the 2010 championship as host, took the lead when Simmons took a long throw-in with her back to goal, spun and scored.

Despite Chile garnering almost twice the amount of possession and outshooting the Caribbean islanders, Trinidad took a 2-0 lead when goalkeeper Veronica Saez was unable to hold a corner and the ball fell to Hinds, who pounced quickly.

Rothfield's goal from distance in the 83rd gave Chile hope, but Marie Lewis nearly ended the threat in injury time but her shot went just high of the crossbar.

In Scarborough, Tobago, Lena Lotzen scored the first of two goals in the fourth minute to spark Germany to the biggest margin of victory in tournament history.

Kristin Demann also scored for Germany, which eclipsed the 7-1 victory Japan achieved over France in 2008.

Trinidad next faces Nigeria, 3-2 winners over defending champion North Korea, on Wednesday, while Mexico will try to recover from its opening-day loss when it takes on South Korea,

CONCACAF champion Canada will open its World Cup schedule on Monday against Ghana.
