Appearing at the Women's World Cup for a second time and a third-place finish at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara in 2011 has solidified Mexico's claim as the head of CONCACAF's second tier in women's soccer behind perennial heavyweights Canada and the United States. Coach Leonardo Cuellar deepened his teams depth by incorporating younger talent at the Pan Ams such as 18-year-old attacker Tanya Samarzich and 19-year-old defender Valeria Miranda. Despite only 17, Cecilia Santiago already has established herself as the No. 1 goalkeeper on a young team, which still draws on 33-year-old Maribel Dominguez for leadership.
