WOLFSBURG, Germany - Monica Ocampo scored with a right-footed strike from 30 meters to give Mexico a 1-1 draw with England in the Women's World Cup opener for both teams on Monday.

Ocampo was given space and unleashed a curling shot in the 33rd minute that England keeper Karen Bardsley, who plays in the United States for Sky Blue of WPS, was slow to react to, and let it get between her and her right post.

The goal equalized after Fara Williams put England ahead 12 minutes earlier, heading in Karen Carney's corner kick from the edge of the six.

Both sides had chances in the second half. Mexico's Maribel Dominguez and Ocampo both missed just wide with free kicks from just beyond the penalty area. But England's Eniola Aluko had the best opportunity, failing to get her foot onto a bouncing ball in the middle of the six from Rachel Yankey's headed cross.

Mexico next faces Japan, 2-1 winners over New Zealand, on Friday in Leverkusen.
