PANAMA CITY - European and World Cup champion Spain scored three first-half goals and defeated Panama 5-1 on Wednesday in an international friendly.
Pedro scored twice and Andres Iniesta set up a pair of goals for Spain, which extended its unbeaten streak to 17 matches. Panama, which is next scheduled to play in the Copa Centroamericana in January, saw its winless streak lengthen to three with only one victory in its last five.
With Panama trailing 5-0, Gabriel Gomez converted an 87th-minute penalty for a consolation goal after Nelson Barahona earned the spot chance by drawing a foul from Cesc Fabregas.
Spain controlled the possession from the start, forcing Panama to rely on counters with Gabriel Torres and Blas Perez offering "Los Canaleros'" best efforts from distance that went wide in the 23rd, 32nd and 37th minutes.
Spain went ahead in the 16th when Pedro and Inesita combined on an exchange of passes and Pedro twisted inside the top of the area to drive a low ball from the right side past Panamanian keeper Jaime Penedo inside the left post.
David Villa doubled the lead in the 29th. Iniesta worked his way to the byline left of the Panamanian goal before sending a low, short pass to the middle of the six, where Villa merely volleyed it past Penedo.
Pedro tacked on a second in the 43rd, running onto a ball from Benat Etxebarria, touching around Penedo and rolling the ball into an open net.
Penedo prevented a worsening of the deficit with diving blocks to deny Villa in the 52nd and Roberto Soldado in the 57th, and Jesus Navas hit the right post from inside 10 meters in the 67th.
But Sergio Ramos added the a fourth goal in the 81st, curling a right-footed free kick from just beyond the arc high inside the right post, and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Markel Susaeta completed the scoring in the 84th
Both sides played with nominally their first choice lineups. Panama was missing foreign-based Roman Torres, Luis Tejada and Rolando Blackburn.
The match was the fifth friendly Spain has played against CONCACAF opponents in a little over two years, also beating the United States and Puerto Rico and drawing with Costa Rica and Mexico.
