KRASNODAR, Russia - Mix Diskerud scored his first goal for the United States in the third minute of injury time and the Americans rallied for a 2-2 draw with Russia on Wednesday to match its best record in a calendar year.
The United States finished with nine victories, three draws and two losses, equaling the .750 winning percentage achieved in 2005, not counting the years of 1926, 1982 and 1983 when it won the only games played that year.
Diskerud volleyed a ball from the top of the area after another second-half sub, Terrence Boyd, headed it into his path.
It was only the third appearance for the 22-year-old Diskerud, who plays for Norway's Rosenborg. Diskerud was one of several youngsters called into an almost exclusively European-based U.S. roster by manager Juergen Klinsmann, including Joshua Gatt, who started to make his international debut.
Russia twice took the lead, the last time on a penalty in the 84th minute when Roman Shirokov converted after Clarence Goodson knocked down Artem Dzyuba as the Russian second-half substitute looked to score from a chipped free kick into the penalty area.
The Russians went ahead in the ninth minute after Danny Williams gave the ball away on an errant free kick at midfield, and Fydor Smolov - also making his international debut - finished from 12 meters after a run down the right side.
Michael Bradley equalized for the United States the first time in the 73rd with a goal similar to Diskerud's. Maurice Edu played a ball into the penalty area, where Juan Aguduelo headed it back and Bradley volleyed the ball from the edge of the 18 into the goal off the left post.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard made several dramatic saves to keep the United States close. He blocked a shot by Renat Yanbayev in the 65th and then moments later tipped an attempt by Vasilii Berezutski over the bar.
Both teams forced to make early sub. Smolov had to be replaced by Maksim Grigoriev in the 11th minute after the 22-year-old appeared to injure his foot on the goal. Similarly, Clarence Goodson was inserted in the 18th minute for captain Carlos Bocanegra, who U.S. team officials said strained his left hamstring.
The result ended the United States' three-game winning streak as well as halting Russia's victorious four-game run.
