OTTAWA - Stephen Hart resigned as coach of the Canadian national team on Thursday, two days after it was beaten by Honduras and eliminated from World Cup qualifying, the Canadian Soccer Association announced.

"Mr. Hart has served as an exemplary model for the game at both the national and international levels," CSA President Victor Montagliani said in a release. "During his tenure with the association, he earned the respect of the Canadian soccer community and helped to raise the profile of the game in this country."

The 52-year-old former Trinidad international served as interim manager of Canada for 10 months in 2006-2007, after Frank Yallop resigned to coach the LA Galaxy, and replaced Dale Mitchell on interim basis again in April 2009. He assumed the job on a permanent basis in eight months later, finishing with 20 victories and 15 draws in 45 matches.

Hart led Canada to the semifinals of the 2007 Gold Cup and the quarterfinals of the 2009 CONCACAF championship, but failed to get past the group stage last year.
