SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras - Honduras advanced to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with an 8-1 victory over Canada, getting three goals each from Jerry Bengtson and Carlo Costly to eliminate the North Americans.
Bengston scored his first in the seventh minute, Honduras led 4-0 by the 32nd minute and went on to its most lopsided victory since a 9-1 defeat of Nicaragua at the 2007 Copa Centroamericana. The loss was the second-worst in Canadian history, falling short of an 8-0 defeat to Mexico at the 1993 Gold Cup.
Bengtson ran onto a headed through ball from Costly and slotted it past the onrushing Canadian 'keeper Lars Hirschfeld to give Honduras the lead and delight the capacity crowd at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.
Canada replied with a chance of their own just four minutes later as Simeon Jackson had a shot from the right side rebound off the post and back at Tosaint Ricketts, but the forward couldn't get a good shot at goal.
Bengtson doubled the lead in the 16th minute. Mario Martinez forced a diving save from Hirschfeld and it came right to an unmarked Bengston on the right side, who tapped it in.
Bengtson played provider in the 28th, heading a ball across the face of goal where Costly converted on a diving header from just a few meters.
The first half scoring came to an end with Mario Martinez getting past Kevin McKenna and adding another.
Three Honduran scoring binge resumed three minutes after the second-half kickoff when Costly scored a second on a cross from Martinez on the right hand side. It looked as though Canadian defender David Edgar may have put the ball in but Costly was credited with his second of the night.
Martinez continued to add to the score in the 59th before Iain Hume scored a consolation goal for Canada with a right-footed free kick in the 76th minute.
But Bengtson scored his third in the 82nd and Costly completed the rout six minutes later.
Honduras finished atop Group C with 11 points, ahead on goal difference in front of Panama, which drew 1-1 in Cuba. Canada was third with 10 points, ahead of only Cuba with one point.
