GUATEMALA CITY - Carlos Ruiz scored with a header in the 85th minute and gave Guatemala a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on Friday to put the Chapines on the verge of advancing to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Ruiz's header at the near post deflected Jose Contreras' in-swinging corner kick and redirected it past Jamaican goalkeeper Dwayne Miller, who had to punch Gregory Ruiz's shot from distance away on the immediately preceding play. It was his third straight qualifier with a goal.

The victory gave Guatemala 10 points and a share of the Group A lead with the United States - three points more than Jamaica -- heading into their Tuesday showdown in Kansas City, Kansas. Only two teams will advance and a draw between the Americans and Guatemalans would send both of them through.

Jamaica plays its group finale on Tuesday at home against winless fellow Caribbean side Antigua & Barbuda.

Guatemala took the lead in the 16th minute when Carlos Figueroa took a ball 25 meters from goal, turned, sprinted toward goal. He got past Jamaican defenders Jason Morrison, Lovel Palmer and Nyron Nosworthy before chipping a ball - with Shavar Thomas racing in to challenge - over Miller from nine meters.

Jamaica was largely limited to shots from distance, including one on a free kick from 40 meters that Guatamalan keeper Ricardo Jerez grabbed in the 19th minute.

But the Reggae Boyz were able to equalize with a penalty by Luton Shelton in the 61st minute after Contreras was called for a scissors-like tackle on Dane Richards at the 18 as both raced to get to a loose ball.

The goal was Shelton's second in three games during qualifying, adding to the winner he had in a 2-1 victory over the United States in September.

The win kept Guatemala unbeaten at home in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup with a fifth victory in six games. Guatemala, however, has never beaten the Americans in 11 games in the United States, having lost 10 times.
