HOUSTON - Guyana will play its home World Cup qualifier against Mexico on October 12 at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo and Mexican Football Federation have announced.
Guyana appealed to FIFA citing a conflict with the originally announced venue of Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The Dynamo said on its website Monday night that it would host the match and the Mexican federation confirmed the venue change Tuesday morning.
The $95-million BBVA Compass Stadium, which has a capacity of 22,000, opened May 12. Besides serving as home to the Dynamo - who played their first six years at Robertson Stadium , BBVA also has hosted international rugby and American football.
It also was the site of an international soccer friendly between New Zealand an El Salvador on May 23.
Mexico already has qualified for the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, having won all four its matches, while Guyana is on the brink of elimination with one point. El Salvador is second in Group B with five points and Costa Rica is third with four.
Guyana must win both of its remaining games to have any chance of advancing. Only two teams from the group will qualify for the final six-team - or "hexagonal" - round.
