SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- After going winless in its opening two games in the third round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, Honduras obtained its second-consecutive victory by defeating Cuba 1-0 on Tuesday night at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.
The result catapulted the Catrachos into second place with seven points, leading Canada on goal difference (+2 to 0). First-place Panama has nine points after a 2-0 over the Canadians earlier in the evening.
Despite a pleasing defensive effort that resulted in its third-straight qualifying shutout, Honduras struggled somewhat on the offensive end of the field, scoring its only goal in the 33rd minute courtesy of Jerry Bengtson. The outstanding Roger Espinoza did all the hard work in that sequence, though, chipping a ball to the unmarked New England Revolution forward, who only had to nod it into the net from close range.
It was Bengtson's second goal against Cuba in two games over four days. The current Central American champion won the first encounter 3-0 in Havana on Friday.
The result eliminated Cuba from the competition with two group games left, making it the first team to drop from contention. The Leones del Caribe have lost each of its opening four games and failed to score a single goal. Defensively, however, it has held its own, conceding only one goal in a game on three occasions.
Honduras will close group play with a tricky away encounter against Panama on October 12, before hosting Canada four days later.
