PROVIDENCE, Guyana -- El Salvador snapped a three-game winless streak in World Cup Qualifying, turning aside Guyana 3-2 on Tuesday at Providence Stadium.

In a back and forth game that was even on two occasions, Rafael Burgos took advantage of defensive uncertainty in the 76th minute to score the game-winner.

Guyana entered the third round, Group B encounter needing a win to maintain any realistic hope of advancing to the hexagonal and it got off to a dream start. In the first minute of play, Gregory Richardson fired home a shot from 18-yards out to give the host a 1-0 lead with his first goal of qualifying.

El Salvador, however, was able to limit the damage and leveled through a remarkable header by Osael Romero 11 minutes later.

The visitors took the lead in the 56th minute, when Jaime Alas bounced a shot past Richard Reynolds, the outstretched Guyana goalkeeper, after gaining possession of a loose ball outside the penalty area.

To its credit, Guyana never quit and it was rewarded for its persistence in the 62nd minute as team captain Chris Nurse found the net from close range.

With the score on equal terms at 2-2, El Salvador pushed for the win. Burgos, who is currently on loan at Kecskeméti TE in Hungary, provided the heroics.

El Salvador now has five points from four games, keeping it in contention to progress. Though Guyana has one point, it still has a mathematical chance of advancing.
