MEXICO CITY -- Cruz Azul announced Sunday that attacker Pablo Barrera ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and could be out of action for approximately six months. The injury means that he will miss Mexico's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica on Sept. 7 and 11.

Barrera played the full 90 minutes without problem in Cruz Azul's 1-1 draw against Pachuca on Saturday. After the match, on his way back to the locker room, Barrera reportedly felt a pain that caused a noticeable limp.

On Sunday, the 25-year-old underwent an MRI before he was supposed to report to Mexico's training camp. The test confirmed that the right knee sustained damage.

Barrera was scheduled to undergo surgery in Guadalajara today.
