KINGSTON, Jamaica - Goals by Demar Phillips and Ryan Johnson led Jamaica past Guatemala 2-1 on Friday, extending its unbeaten streak to 13 games against the Central Americans as it opened its bid for a berth in the 2014 World Cup.
Phillips put the Reggae Boyz ahead in the 40th and Johnson added the eventual winner in the opening minute of the second half to send Jamaica to its sixth straight win against Guatemala, which has never beaten the Caribbean islanders since their first meeting in 1969.
Jamaica has won 10 of the 13 matches.
Dwight Pezzarossi scored two minutes into second-half injury time for Guatemala, which won all six of its matches in the previous round of World Cup qualifying last fall.
Guatemala will return home on Tuesday to face the United States, which beat Antigua and Barbuda 3-1 on Friday in their Group A opener and is unbeaten in 17 against "Los Chapines".
Guatemala has not scored in eight matches against the United States since 2000.
Jamaica will travel to face Caribbean rival Antigua, which has beaten the Reggae Boyz only once in five meetings.
