BOGOTA, Colombia - Ulises Davila, Jorge Enriquez and Edson Rivera all scored to rally Mexico to a 3-1 victory over France in the third-place match at the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday and give El Tri a second podium finish in a men's youth world championship this year.
Davila equalized four minutes after Alexandre Lacazette put France ahead in the eight minute, and Enriquez and Rivera add second-half tallies to give Mexico its best finish at the U-20 World Cup since losing the title match in 1977.
The victory in the consolation game salved some of the disappointment of losing to eventual champion Brazil in the semifinals and failing to match the success of their U-17 counterparts, who captured the world crown in July.
Lacazette gave France the lead when he headed in Timotee Kolodziejczak's cross from the edge of the six-yard box, but a gaffe by Jonathan Ligali gave Mexico the equalizer when he allowed Davila's seemingly harmless shot from distance to inexplicably roll through his legs.
France outshot Mexico 21-15 and had more of the possession but El Tri had twice as many chances on goal, and went ahead in the 49th when Enriquez volleyed in a free kick by Diego De Buen that went to the far side and was headed twice back into near post.
Rivera added insurance in the 71st minute, heading in Davila's out-swinging corner kick from just outside the six for his team-leading third goal of the tournament.
"This result is a reward for the good work done in Mexico, by the federations and all the clubs," Mexico coach Juan Carlos Chavez said. "We can see the results in the U-17s, the U-20s and the national team.
"My players have been in contact during the whole tournament with the national coach (Jose Manuel "Chepo") De La Torre, and hopefully some of them will keep on improving and work with him in the national team."
