CARTEGENA, Colombia - Goalkeeper Jack Butland thwarted Taufic Guarch's penalty attempt in the 13th minute and Mexico settled for a 0-0 draw with England on Thursday that sent El Tri to the second round of the Under-20 World Cup.
Mexico finished in second place in Group F with four points, three behind Argentina, and next will face the runner-up from Group B on Tuesday in Pereira.
In Barranquilla, Panama surrendered a pair of goals in each half and lost 4-0 to Brazil, its second straight loss that all but mathematically eliminated the Central Americans.
Los Canaleros were left in third place in Group E with one point, but with having been outscored 5-0 in its three games seemed unlikely to advance.
Guarch tested Butland more than once, shooting just over bar and forcing the England keeper into a save in the 30th man after the Mexican forward had broke in alone.
Butland's Mexican counterpart also was required to make athletic stops, blocking Saido Berhino's shot off Dean Parrett's cross, but it was Mexico with the better of play throughout, outshooting England 17-6.
Brazil dominated for the opening 15 minutes against Panama, but did not test keeper Luis Mejia and didn't take the lead until the 40th minute when Henrique scored his second goal of the tournament.
Henrique set up Philippe Coutinho in the first minute of first-half injury time, and Coutinho added to the lead eight minutes after the restart.
Dudu completed the scoring in the 89th, completing a performance in which Panama must only two chances on goal.
