MANIZALEZ, Colombia - Joel Campbell scored twice in five minutes and set up John Ruiz for the winner in the 72nd minute to lead Costa Rica over Australia 3-2 on Wednesday and into contention for a second-round berth at the U-20 World Cup.
In Armenia, Guatemala suffered a second lopsided loss in four days, allowing goals by six different players in a 6-0 loss to Saudi Arabia.
The results left Costa Rica in second place in Group C with three points, three behind Spain and two ahead of Australia and Ecuador. Guatemala remained last in Group D, having been outscored 11-0 in its two matches.
In Manizales, Campbell twice gave Costa Rica the lead. Against the run of play in the 22nd minute he received the ball in the area, feinted a shot and eluded his defender before beating Australian keeper Mark Birighitti.
Seconds after Australia equalized in the 26th, Campbell again put Costa Rica ahead, half-volleying a cross from the right to give the Ticos a 2-1 lead.
Costa Rica's Francisco Calvo tied the match a second time in the 64th, mis-hitting an attempted clearance of a cross and putting it past his own keeper.
But Campbell curled in a corner eight minutes later than Ruiz converted for his second goal of the tournament.
Despite five lineup changes from its 5-0 loss to Nigeria on Sunday, Guatemala was outshot 15-5 in shots on goal and struggled to maintain possession against Saudi Arabia.
Yahya Dagiri and Yasir Alfahmi had the Asians ahead 2-0 by the 27th minutes and four more in the second half all but mathematically assured Guatemala of a first-round exit.
Costa Rica will play Ecuador in its group finale on Saturday while Guatemala will look for its first goal the same day against Croatia, which also has lost both of its opening games.
