MEDELLIN, Colombia - An own-goal and second-half strikes by Taufic Guarch and Diego de Buen gave Mexico a 3-0 victory over North Korea on Monday and moved it back in contention for a second-round berth at the Under-20 World Cup.
Panama, however, surrendered a 67th-minute goal by Ahmed Hegazi and fell 1-0 to Egypt in Barranquilla, its second match without scoring a goal.
Mexico outshot North Korea 26-6, including 7-1 on goal, but needed a defensive flub to take the lead in first-half injury time.
After Ulises Davila lost possession, Jang Song Hyok tried to clear the ball, but his attempt stuck his teammate Ri Yong Chol and rolled into the net.
Guarch doubled the lead in the 54th, driving a shot from 20 meters that Korean keeper Om Jin Song - who tipped a De Buen shot onto the crossbar in the 13th - was only able to get his fingers to but not stop.
De Buen finally got his goal with virtually the last touch of the ball in the fourth minute of injury time, driving a free kick past the wall and Om.
"Until the first goal, we had many chances, but we hadn't converted them," Mexico coach Juan Carlos Chavez said. "Finally it came, and at the right moment before the half-time, and it was fully deserved. The second goal made our game much easier."
In Baranquilla, Panama survived a Mohamed Salah cross that deflected off Panamanian defender Edward Benitez and banged off the left post in the 20th minute, but could not prevent Hegazi from heading in Aly Fathy's free kick.
The result left Panama, which had only three shots on goal, with one point, last in Group E and with a match against Brazil remaining on Thursday.
"We knew we could do harm with our free kicks, but it didn't go as I expected," Panama coach Alfredo Poyatos said. "The future is dark, but we are still alive in the tournament."
Mexico, which lost its opener 1-0 to Argentina, improved to three points in Group F with a match against England remaining on Thursday.
