PACHUCA, Mexico - Carlos Fierro scored his third goal in four games and led Mexico into the quarterfinals of the Under-17 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over fellow CONCACAF side Panama on Thursday.
Fierro scored in the second minute and hit the crossbar in the 80th to put Mexico in the final eight for the first time since it won the title in 2005.
Earlier in the day in Queretaro, the CONCACAF champion United States outshot Germany but lost 4-0 to record a ninth loss in 16 matches against European teams at the U-17 World Cup. It was the fourth straight loss to a European team in the knockout rounds.
Mexico advances to face France, which rallied to beat Ivory Coast 3-2 in Queretaro on Thursday.
El Tri, which 61 percent of the possession according to FIFA statistics, will play the French on Monday in Pachuca.
Playing in a constant rain, Marco Bueno added Mexico's insurance goal in the 89th minute, heading in at the near post from Julio Gomez's inswinging corner kick.
The win was a fourth straight by Mexico over Panama at the U-17 level, having beaten "Los Canaleros" three times at the CONCACAF championship, in 1985, 1994 and 2007. Panama was playing in the second stage of a FIFA competition for the first time.
In Queretaro, Koray Guenter, Mitchel Weiser and Samed Yesil all scored to give Germany a 3-0 lead by halftime. Marvin Ducksh added a finale in the 50th.
It was the third straight time the United States has been eliminated from the U-17 World Cup in the second round.
The Americans outshot Germany 22-19 but were almost twice as good at putting chances on goal, 14-8.
Since allowing a goal to Ecuador in its opening game, Germany has outscored its opponents 14-0.
