MONTERREY, Mexico - Arturo Gonzalez scored in the fourth minute of injury time to give Mexico a 3-2 victory over the Netherlands on Friday, completing a perfect first round for El Tri and eliminating the European champion Dutch from the Under-17 World Cup.
Giovani Casillas and Carlos Fiero scored their second goals of the tournament and Mexico advanced to a June 30 second-round meeting as the Group A winner.
In another match, Jamaica surrendered a second-half goal and drew 1-1 with France, eliminating the Reggae Boyz.
Casillas and Fiero scored in the 29th and 43rd minutes to put Mexico ahead 2-0 by halftime, but Memphis Depay and Kyle Ebecilio equalized by the 63rd minute. Mexican keeper Richard Sanchez kept Mexico in the lead in the 58th, thwarting Anass Achahbar on a penalty after Francisco Flores was called for a handball.
Despite being outshot 25-12, Gonzalez's injury time goal gave Mexico its third win in as many games, outscoring its opponents 8-4.
Jamaica went ahead in the ninth minute on a goal by Andre Lewis, but allowed a 58th-minute strike to Yassine Benzia - his third of the tournament, to settle for a draw.
France wasted its chance for the win in the 70th when Jordan Ikoko put a penalty attempt wide after Romario Williams was cautioned for tripping Benzia. Jamaica's chances for victory essentially evaporated when Jason Wint was ejected for a reckless tackle in the 79th.
The draw gave Jamaica its first point of the competition but finished it in last place in Group B behind Japan, France and Argentina.
