PACHUCA, Mexico - Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts scored an equalizing goal from his own half of the field in the 87th minute and gave Canada a 2-2 draw with England on Wednesday at the Under-17 World Cup.
Roberts' dribbled upfield before launching a ball that took one bounce and went over the head of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, giving the Canadians their first point of the competition in two games.
In Torreon, the United States surrendered a goal in each half and lost 2-1 to Uzbekistan, sending it to a first-round finale against New Zealand on Saturday with every team in Group D tied with three points.
Playing before a crowd of 17,882 at Estadio Hidalgo, England twice took the lead only for Canada to match each time, including the dramatic strike from distance by Roberts, filling in for regular keeper Mazime Crepeau who was injured in the opening loss to Uruguay.
England started out with possession and chances - beginning with Nick Powell's shot off the post in the 11th minute, but needed until the 46th minute to go ahead when Adam Morgan headed in Powell's free kick.
Canada tied the match four minutes later when Sadi Jalali pounced on a rebound after Pickford blocked Keven Aleman's initial shot. England reclaimed the lead in the 77th when second-half substitute Blair Turgott scored.
But Canada, despite being outshot 25-10, kept alive its hopes of advancing when Roberts scored, sending it to a Group C finale Saturday against Rwanda.
The Americans were hampered by some sloppy defending and fell behind in the 13th minute when Zachary Carroll's attempted right-footed clearance at the top of the 18 went upward about 15 meters. Timur Khakimov positioned himself to settle, and tipped it into the path of 15-year-old Bobir Davlatov, who struck the ball first-time with his left foot to beat U.S. keeper Kendall McIntosh from just beyond the arc.
Carroll tried to acquit himself on the offensive end and the United States equalized in two minutes into the second half. A free kick into the area was cleared and the ball found itself at the feet of the American defender 40 meters from goal.
His hard low ball back into the middle of the area was trapped on the 18 by Alfred Karoma, who turned, took three touches to ward off a defender and finished with a low rolling ball.
But Carroll was to blame for Uzbekistan's second goal, knocking down Abbosbek Makhstaliev with a shoulder to draw a penalty, and the Pakhtakor Tashkent midfielder converted in the 54th for the eventual winner.
