MORELIA, Mexico - Host Mexico overcame an early deficit and rallied for a 3-1 victory over Asian champion North Korea on Saturday, the opening day of the Under-17 World Cup.

Giovani Casillas created the go-ahead goal and added an insurance strike in the second half as Mexico capitalized on an undermanned North Korea, reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper Cha Jong Hun was ejected in the 54th minute.

In Monterrey, Jamaica opened with a 1-0 loss to Japan, surrendering a 61st-minute goal.

Mexico fell behind in third minute when Jo Kwang ran onto a through ball, settled and beat keeper Richard Sanchez.

The early strike gave North Korea enough comfort to defend and try to counter, enabling Mexico to create numerous chances that Arturo González, Marco Bueno and Carlos Fierro failed to convert.

However, with the support of the crowd of 43,000 at Estadio Morelos, Mexico equalized in the 37th when Fierro hit a volley from close range after a defensive mix-up.

Cha was sent off for bringing down Bueno and Mexico went ahead in the 68th when Casilla's cross was deflected into the Korean net by a sprawling Jong Kwang Sok.

Mexico assured its victory with four minutes remaining when replacement keeper An Kang Chol failed to hold Fierro's shot, and Casillas pounced on the loose ball.

In the other game involving a CONCACAF team, Jamaica hit the post with Romario Williams' strike from distance in the 19th minute, but Japan dominated possession and stifled the offense of the "Young Boyz".

Second-half substitute Masaya Matsumoto combined with Sei Muroya and eluded goalkeeper Nico Campbell in the 61st minute to give Japan the only goal it needed.

Both Mexico and Jamaica play again on Tuesday, with the host remaining in Morelia to face the Republic of Congo, while the Young Boyz take on Argentina in Monterrey.
