MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica - Alfred Koroma gave the United States a 27th-minute lead and Andrew Oliver and Esteban Rodriguez Jr. added second-half goals to pace the Americans to a 3-1 victory over Cuba on Monday at the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.
Frank Lopez scored in the 68th minute for Cuba, which lost for a second straight time to the Americans in the CONCACAF U-17 finals.
The Americans are aiming for their 14th straight trip to the U-17 World Cup and to continue their streak of being the only nation to have qualified for every edition.
After Koroma put the United States ahead, Cuba's Kianz Froese crashed a shot off the crossbar from 20 yards.
But Oliver doubled the American advantage two minutes into the second half, holding off a Cuban defender in the box before slipping the ball past goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez.
Rodriguez increased the lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute, converting a feed from Dillon Serna.
The third goal appeared to spark Cuba, which cut the deficit when Lopez tallied and continued to push forward the remainder of the match.
U.S. goalkeeper Fernando Pina preserved the two-goal cushion, smothering Javier Aguilar on a breakaway.
The loss ended the Cubans' four-game unbeaten streak in competitive matches dating back to the 2009 CONCACAF championship, and was in marked contrast to their 5-0 loss to the United States that year.
The United States next faces Panama on Friday while Cuba will need at least a draw against "Los Canaleros" on Wednesday to have any hope of advancing.
