As part of a year-long commemoration, a weekly feature titled "This Week in CONCACAF History" will take a brief look back at some of the confederation's most historic games and happenings.

Through "This Week in CONCACAF History" you can revisit the region's most memorable people, events and crowning achievements.

September 1-9

September 1, 2002: Guyana's Dianne Ferreira-James became the first CONCACAF referee to officiate the final of the inaugural FIFA U-19 (now U-20) Women's World Cup in Canada … Ferreira-James was in charge of the Canada - USA final (won by the Stars & Stripes 1-0 after extra time) at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.

September 2, 1959: William Looby and Al Zerhusen had two goals each, while Ed Murphy added another for the host USA in a 5-0 win over Cuba during the Final Group of the 1959 Pan American Games Men's Tournament at Chicago's Hanson Park … The Stars & Stripes went on to capture the bronze medal after finishing in third place with a 4-2-0 record behind Argentina and Brazil, who won the gold and silver medals, respectively.

September 3, 1972: After becoming the first CONCACAF team to progress out of the group stage in two consecutive Men's Olympic Football Tournaments, Mexico held the host West Germany to a 1-1 draw to open the Second Round Group A of the 1972 event at the Nuremberg Stadium … The home side took a fifth-minute lead on a goal by Ottmar Hitzfeld, but Leonardo Cuellar scored the equalizer for the Tricolor in the 69th minute … It was also the first time a CONCACAF squad played to a draw against the host nation … Mexico's run ended by losing its remaining two matches against East Germany (7-0) and Hungary (2-0) on September 5 and 8, respectively.

September 4, 2006: Turks & Caicos Islands earned a 2-0 victory over the Cayman Islands in a 2007 Digicel Caribbean Cup First Round Group E game (Caribbean Qualifier to 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup) at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba … Gavin Glinton (14th) and Maxime Fleuriot (72nd) scored for Turks & Caicos Islands in their first win as a member of FIFA and CONCACAF … However, Turks & Caicos was eliminated from group play after a 3-2 loss to the Bahamas two days later.

September 5, 1996: Cuba and USA qualified for the 1996 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Spain after defeating Mexico and host Guatemala, respectively, in the semifinals of the inaugural CONCACAF Championship at the Guatemala City's FUTECA Roosevelt … Camilo Kindelan and Juan Portal scored for the Leones del Caribe in a 2-1 triumph over the Tricolores … Meanwhile, Dennis Brose's hat-trick (three goals) along with goals from Glen Carbonara, George Fernandez, Mark Moser and Wes Wade led the Stars & Stripes to a 7-3 victory over the Chapines … The USA won its first Confederation Futsal crown two days later by topping Cuba 7-3 in the final.

September 6, 1998: Host Canada claimed its first CONCACAF Women's Championship by defeating Mexico, 1-0, in the 1998 Final held at Toronto's Centennial Stadium … Liz Smith (42nd) scored the only goal of the match as the Maple Leafs also earned the Confederation berth to the 199 FIFA Women's World Cup in the USA.

September 7, 2003: Elliot Godfrey, Kevin Harmse, David Masciantonio and Tamandani Nsaliwa each scored two goals, while Robert Friend and Christopher Pozniak added one apiece for visiting Canada in a 10-0 win against the US Virgin Islands in the first leg of the 2004 CONCACAF Men's Under-23 Olympic Qualifying Tournament First Round at Fredericksted's Paul E. Joseph Stadium … The Maple Leafs won the second-leg 14-0 and progressed to the second round where they eliminated El Salvador for a spot into the final stage (in Mexico) … Canada's run ended losing all three Group A matches during the final round.

September 8, 1984: Mexico captured its eighth CONCACAF Youth (now Under-20) Championship by posting a 2-1 victory after extra time against Canada in the final at the National Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago … The Tricolores, along with the Maple Leafs, also secured berths to the 1985 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Soviet Union.

September 9, 2007: Eloy Matos scored twice, while Sol Carere and Steven Estrada added a goal apiece for Puerto Rico as it earned its first victory at the CONCACAF Men's Under-23 Olympic Qualifying Tournament by defeating the Cayman Islands 4-1 in Caribbean First Round Group C at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba … The Boricuas then lost to the host and defeated Bermuda to finish second in group play with 6 points, however, it wasn't enough to progress to the next round of the 2008 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
