As part of a year-long commemoration, a weekly feature titled "This Week in CONCACAF History" will take a brief look back at some of the confederation's most historic games and happenings.

Through "This Week in CONCACAF History" you can revisit the region's most memorable people, events and crowning achievements.

August 16-22

August 16, 1998: Eddie Pope (41st) scored the only goal of the match to lead the USA's D.C. United to the 1998 CONCACAF Champions' Cup title after 1-0 win over visiting CD Toluca of Mexico in the final at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. … D.C. United, which became the first USA club to win the CONCACAF crown, reached the final by defeating Trinidad & Tobago's Joe Public FC and Leon of Mexico in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

August 17, 1997: Felipe Robles' (34th) goal gave Mexico's CD Guadalajara a 1-0 win over visiting CS Cartagines of Costa Rica in a 1997 CONCACAF Champions' Cup quarterfinal encounter at Guadalajara's Estadio Jalisco … CD Guadalajara, which was playing in the final round for the first time since 1984, lost 3-2 to CD SC Cruz Azul of Mexico in the semifinals on August 22, in Washington, D.C. (USA) and, then, shared the tournament's third-place honor after a 2-2 draw against USA's D.C. United on August 24.

August 18, 2002: Guyana's Dianne Ferreira-James became the first CONCACAF Referee to officiate a match during the inaugural FIFA U-19 (now U-20) World Cup (Canada 2002) … Ferreira-James was in charge of the Nigeria - Japan group encounter (1-1) at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.

August 19, 1998: Goals by Oscar Mascorro (8th) and Emilio Mora (46th) gave Mexico a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in the semifinals of the 1998 Central American & Caribbean Games Men's Tournament at the Estadio Jose Encarnación Romero in Maraciabo, Venezuela … The Tricolores had to settle for the silver medal two days later losing 3-1 to the host, while the Ticos claimed the bronze after defeating Trinidad & Tobago, 6-1.

August 20, 1989: Trinidad & Tobago earned its first CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying win in Central America after defeating host Guatemala, 1-0, on a Kerry Jamerson goal (57th) at Guatemala City's Estadio Mateo Flores … The victory enabled the Soca Warriors to reach the last match of the Final Round, however, they lost 1-0 to visiting USA and did not qualify for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.

August 21, 1994: The USA won its third-consecutive CONCACAF Women's Championship after defeating host Canada, 6-0, to conclude the 1994 Final Round Group held at Montreal's Stade Centre Claude Robillard … The Stars & Stripes' offense had tallies from Michelle Akers-Stahl, Carin Gabarra, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Tiffany Roberts, along with an own-goal by the Maple Leafs' Andrea Neil … The USA ended tournament play with a perfect 4-0-0 record (12 points) and qualified with runner-up Canada (3-1-0 record, 9 points) to the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup in Sweden.

August 22, 1962: The Netherlands Antilles (now Curacao) captured its second-ever gold medal at the Central American & Caribbean Games Men's Tournament after defeating Mexico 3-0 to conclude the 1962 Final Round held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica …Stanley Schoop (37th), Ocando Wernet (52nd) and Ruben Brandborg (73rd) all scored for the Netherlands Antilles, which finished first with perfect record of 5-0-0 (10 points) in the six-team group.
