August 9-15
August 9, 1985: Mexico's Joaquin Urrea became the first CONCACAF Referee to officiate a semifinal match during the inaugural FIFA U-16 (now U-17) World Cup held in 1985 in China … Urrea was the man in the middle of the West Germany - Brazil encounter (won by the Germans 4-3) at Beijing Stadium.August 10, 2008: Cuba won the 2008 CFU (Caribbean Football Union) Youth Cup after defeating host Trinidad & Tobago in the final, 2-1, at Macoya's Marvin Lee Stadium … Randy Lizama (46th) and Osvaldo Lemus (83rd) each scored for the Leones del Caribe, while Ross Russell (90th) had the only goal for the Soca Warriors in the loss … The CFU Youth Cup, which doubled as the Caribbean qualifier for the 2009 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, also had both Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago secure berths to the Confederation Tournament.
August 11, 2007: Three goals by Yuri Morales, plus one each from Anthony Chimienti and Zak Ibsen, led the USA's Beach Soccer Team to a 5-4 victory over host Mexico in the final match of group play at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess Hotel Beach in Acapulco, Guerrero… The victory secured a second-consecutive CONCACAF title for the Stars & Stripes as they also qualified (along with Mexico) for the 2007 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup … The USA concluded the event in Acapulco the next day with a 4-3 win against South American champion Uruguay.
August 12, 1971: Cuba captured its first medal (bronze) at the Pan American Games Men's Tournament after defeating Canada, 1-0, at the Estadio R. Escobar in Cali, Colombia, to conclude the 1971 Final Round Group … Jose Hernandez (63rd) had the only goal of the match for the Leones del Caribe, who finished third in the six-team standings with 6 points (3-2-0 record), losing the second spot to the host on goal difference (+3 to +2) and behind group winner Argentina (9 points).
August 13, 1991: Joe-Max Moore's goal five minutes into extra time gave the USA a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the 1991 Pan American Games Men's Tournament Final at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba … Prior to Moore's game-winner, Salvador Mariscal (17th) gave the Tricolores the lead, but Claudio Reyna (35th) tied it for the Stars & Stripes, sending the match into extra time … It was the first time the USA won the event's gold medal.
August 14, 1982: Joel Ruiz scored twice, including the 112th minute game-winner, to lead Mexico to a 2-1 win over Bermuda in the semifinals of the 1982 Central American & Caribbean Men's Tournament at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba … Ruiz (23rd) had given the Tricolores the lead before George Brangman (35th) tied it for the Warriors … Mexico settled for the silver medal as it lost 1-0 to Venezuela two days later.
August 15, 1980: Mexico and host USA qualified for the 1981 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Australia after defeating Canada and Honduras, respectively, on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Youth Tournament in Washington, D.C. … Mexico drew 1-1 against Canada before prevailing 4:3 in the penalty shootout, while USA topped Honduras 9:8 on penalties after playing to a scoreless deadlock … The Tricolores captured their sixth consecutive CONCACAF crown (seventh overall) two days later posting a 2-0 triumph over the Stars & Stripes in the tournament final
