As part of a year-long commemoration, a weekly feature titled "This Week in CONCACAF History" will take a brief look back at some of the confederation's most historic games and happenings.

Through "This Week in CONCACAF History" you can revisit the region's most memorable people, events and crowning achievements.

July 10-16

July 10, 1999: A record crowd of 90,185 saw Brandi Chastain notch the game-winning penalty kick as host USA defeated China, after a scoreless 120 minutes of play in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California … The victory gave the Stars & Stripes its first world title since the inaugural FIFA tournament in 1991.

July 11, 1993: Luis Roberto Alves (also known as "Zague") scored a record seven goals, leading host Mexico to a 9-0 win over Martinique in a Group B encounter at the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup played in Mexico City's Estadio Azteca.

July 12, 1987: Canada became the first CONCACAF nation to host a FIFA Under-16 (now U-17) World Cup as it opened the 1987 event with a 3-0 loss to Italy at Toronto's Varsity Stadium.

July 13, 1947: Adalberto Lopez posted a hat-trick (three goals), while Rodrigo Ruiz and Angel Segura each added a goal for Mexico in a 5-0 win over the USA in the first match of the inaugural North American Football Confederation Championship at the Estadio La Tropical in Havana, Cuba … The Tricolor then defeated the host, 3-1, four days later at the same venue to capture the 1947 title … The Leones del Caribe finished second after topping the Stars & Stripes, 5-2, in the last match of the triangular on July 20.

July 14, 2002:Haiti held host Dominican Republic to a 1-1 draw in the first-leg of Caribbean Under-20 Preliminary Qualifying at the Estadio Reformatorio in San Cristóbal … Brunel Fucien (36th) gave the Les Bicolor the lead, but Adrian Valenzuela (83rd) tied it for the Quisqueyanos … Seven days later, Haiti won the return-leg 2-1 in Port-au-Prince … Les Bicolor continued to the next round by finishing first in Group 3 in St. Kitts & Nevis and then eliminated Jamaica in the second stage to progress for the first time in history to the 2002 CONCACAF Under-20 Final Round (where they took third-place in Group B behind Canada and host USA).

July 15, 1952: USA's John Best became the first North American Referee to officiate the opening match of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament (Helsinki 1952) … John Best was the man in the middle as Yugoslavia defeated India 10:1 during the preliminary round encounter held at Töölön Pallokenttä Stadium in Helsinki, Finland.

July 16, 2000: Host Barbados earned its first win over a non-Caribbean team in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (for Japan/Korea 2002) after defeating Costa Rica, 2-1, in its opening match of the Semifinal Round Group C at Bridgetown's National Stadium … After Alexander Madrigal (48th) gave the Ticos the lead, the Bajans got consecutive goals by Llewellyn Riley (49th) and Michael Forde (84th) for the victory … Barbados, however, was eliminated following five-consecutive losses to conclude group play.
