June 1-9
July 1, 2007: Despite opening the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 3-0 loss to Chile at Toronto's National Soccer Stadium (now BMO Field), Canada became the first CONCACAF nation to host both World Youth Championships (U-17, U-20) … The 52-game tournament held across six venues in Canada, drew a FIFA record of 1,195,239 total spectators … The record attendances topped Mexico's FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1983 of 1,155,160.
July 2, 1986: Goals by Amado Povea (34th) and Carlos Gonzalez (89th) led Cuba to a 2-0 win against Mexico in the semifinals of the 1986 Central American & Caribbean Games Men's Football Tournament at the Estadio Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic … The Leones del Caribe continued on to the finals two days later, where they defeated Honduras on penalties (4:2) after a 1-1 draw to capture their record fifth gold medal.
July 3, 1991:The USA's Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosted a record four matches in a single day to conclude group stage of the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup … A crowd of 36,703 witnessed: Canada earn its first tournament victory (3-2 against Jamaica); a last minute Guatemalan goal that eliminated Trinidad & Tobago (1-0) from a semifinal berth; a Costa Rican own-goal (first one in the history of the tournament) that gave the USA a come-from-behind win (3-2); and Honduras claim the group title holding Mexico to a draw (1-1).
July 4, 1979: After earning its first Pan American medal (bronze) eight years earlier, Cuba began the 1979 men's football tournament with a 2-2 draw against Guatemala in Group B play at the Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan, Puerto Rico … The Leones del Caribe continued to the next round where they played Argentina to a scoreless draw (July 8) and, then, defeated the USA 5-0 (July 12) to advance to the final, where they had to settle for the silver medal after losing 3-0 to Brazil (July 14).
July 5, 2003: Iris Mora and Rubi Sandoval scored for host Mexico in a 2-2 draw against Japan in the first-leg of the home-and-away qualifying playoff for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup … The crowd of 75,000 at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca was the largest-ever to witness a women's game on Mexican soil … However, the Tricolores were eliminated after losing the second-leg 2-0 seven days later in Tokyo.
July 6, 1997: Host St. Kitts & Nevis posted a 2-0 win over Martinique during the 1997 Shell Caribbean Cup (now Digicel Caribbean Cup) Final Round Group B at Basseterre's Warner Park … After losing to Trinidad & Tobago in the group finale, the Sugar Boyz advanced to the semifinals and defeated Grenada 2-1 after extra time to reach the final for the first time in history … However, St. Kitts & Nevis' run ended losing 4-0 to Trinidad & Tobago for the Caribbean crown.
July 7, 1991: Fernando Clavijo scored the game-winning penalty kick as host USA defeated Honduras on penalties (4:3) after a scoreless 120 minutes of play in the inaugural CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum … The victory gave the Stars & Stripes their first CONCACAF Championship.
July 8, 1978: Jorge Masso and Roberto Pereira scored twice, while Ramon Nuñez and Andres Roldan each added a goal, to lead defending gold medalist Cuba to a 6-0 victory over El Salvador in the opening match of the 1978 Central American & Caribbean Games Men's Football Tournament at the Estadio Girardot in Medellin, Colombia … The Leones del Caribe went on to win six more games (including a 2-0 aet triumph over Venezuela in the final), while outscoring their opponents 21-2 to become the first team to capture three consecutive men's tournament gold medals (1970, 1974, 1978).
July 9, 1989: Trinidad & Tobago captured the inaugural Shell Caribbean Cup (now Digicel Caribbean Cup) after defeating Grenada, 2-1, in the 1989 final at the National Stadium in Bridgetown, Barbados … Dwight Yorke scored both goals (24th, 89th) for the Soca Warriors, while Wayne Hood (84th) had the only tally for the Spice Boyz
