As part of a year-long commemoration, a weekly feature titled "This Week in CONCACAF History" will take a brief look back at some of the confederation's most historic games and happenings.

Through "This Week in CONCACAF History" you can revisit the region's most memorable people, events and crowning achievements.

June 20-30

June 20, 1990: Goals from Roger Flores and Hernan Medford led Costa Rica to a 2-1 triumph against Sweden at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Geona, Italy, during Group B play of the 1990 FIFA World Cup … The victory gave the Ticos second place (2-1-0, 4 Points) in the group, which was won by Brazil ... As a result, Costa Rica became the first Central American team to reach the 'Round-of-16' … However, itsrun ended three days later with a 4-1 loss to Czechoslovakia.

June 21, 2007: Mexico and USA posted victories against Guadeloupe and Canada, respectively, during the semifinals of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup at Chicago's Soldier Field (USA) … Goals by Frankie Hejduk and Landon Donovan gave the defending champion Stars & Stripes a 2-1 win over the Maple Leafs … Meanwhile, Pavel Pardo scored the game-winner for the Tricolor (1-0) as it topped the Gwada BoysMexico and USA met three days later in the 2007 final that was won by the Stars & Stripes, 2-1, in the same venue for a fourth CONCACAF title.

June 22, 1957: Canada hosted and won its first FIFA World Cup Qualifying game (for Sweden 1958), defeating the USA, 5-1, in Group 2 opening round play at Toronto's Varsity Stadium … Art Hughes scored twice, while Norman McLeod, Pat Philley and Gordon Stewart each added a goal in the victory for the Maple Leafs, who went on to finish second in group play with four points (2-2-0 record) ... Mexico won the group (4-0-0, 8 points).

June 23, 2000: In Hershey, Pennsylvania, three goals by Cindy Parlow and two each from Lorrie Fair and Mia Hamm led host USA to an 11-0 Group A win over Trinidad & Tobago at the inaugural CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup … The USAwould then win three of its next four matches to reach the final, where it defeated Brazil, 1-0, the following month.

June 24, 1973: Surinam's SV Transvaal opened the Caribbean Zone First Round of the 1973 CONCACAF Champions' Cup with an 8-0 victory over visiting Universidad Catolica of Dominican Republic in Paramaribo … After winning the second-leg (6-0) four days later, SV Transvaal then eliminated Netherlands Antilles' (now Curacao)clubs SV SUBT and Jong Colombia to progress to the Final Round Group … Costa Rican clubs LD Alajuelense and Deportivo Saprissa, however,withdrew which resulted in SV Transvaal becoming the first Surinamese club to claim the Champions' Cup.

June 25, 2008: Canada and USA qualified for the 2008 FIFA Women's U-20 World Cup in Chile after posting victories over host Mexico and Costa Rica, respectively, during the semifinals of the CONCACAF Championship at Puebla's Estadio Cuauhtémoc … Goals by Jonelle Filigno and Jodi-Ann Robinson gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 triumph against the Tricolor, while Meghan Klingenberg, Kelly O'Hara, Jessisa McDonald and Ingrid Wells all scored for the Stars & Stripes in the 4-0 victory over the Ticas … Three days later, Mexico also qualified for Chile by topping Costa Rica on penalties (3:2) after a 2-2 draw in the third-place match … Canada would then defeat the USA, 1-0, in the final.

June 26, 1994: A total of 93,869 spectators at Pasedena's Rose Bowl witnessed host USA fall 1-0 to Romania in the Group A finale of the 1994 FIFA World Cup … The record attendance was the highest-ever for the Stars & Stripes on US soil … Despite the loss, the USA advanced to the 'Round of 16', where it was defeated by eventual champion Brazil, 1-0, on July 4.

June 27, 1969: Jose Antonio Quintanilla (101st) scored the game-winning goal during extra time to give El Salvador a 3-2 victory over Honduras in the semifinal playoff match of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico … A third match took place after each team had won its respective home-leg encounters in Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and San Salvador (El Salvador) on June 8 and 15, respectively … El Salvador went advanced to the finals later in the year and defeated Haiti, also in a playoff match, to qualify for the first time to a FIFA World Cup (Mexico 1970).

June 28, 1991: Honduras' Eduardo Bennett scored the first goal (28th) at the inaugural CONCACAF Gold Cup, via a penalty kick, in a Group A encounter against Canada at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (USA) … Juan Carlos Espinoza, Luis Enrique Calix and Eugenio Dolmo Flores added to the Catrachos scoring, as they defeated the Maple Leafs 4:2.

June 29, 1950: After losing a 3-1 encounter to Spain four days earlier, the USA rebounded with a 1-0 triumph against England at the Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in Group 2 of the 1950 FIFA World Cup… Joe Gaetjens (38th) scored the game's only goal, as the Stars & Stripes produced a shocking victory over the Three Lions ... It was the first time a North American nation defeated a European side at the FIFA World Cup … The USA concluded group play two days later losing 5-2 to Chile.

June 30, 1970: Octavio Muciño scored with six minutes remaining to gave visiting CD SC Cruz Azul of Mexico a 1-0 win over the USA's New York Greek-American at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, New York, during the first leg of first round North American Zone play in the 1970 CONCACAF Champions' Cup … CD SC Cruz Azul won the second-leg, 5-0, the following month at the Estadio 10 de Diciembre in Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul to progress to the Final Round … However, Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa and SV Transvaal of Surinam withdrew from the triangular finale which resulted in CD SC Cruz Azul crowned CONCACAF champions for the second consecutive year.
