June 6-12
June 6, 1995: The USA began the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 3-3 draw against China in Group C action at the Stroemvallen Stadium in Gavle, Sweden … The Stars & Stripes went on to defeat Denmark (5-0) and Australia (4-1) to finish first in the group (2-0-1, 7 points) and then eliminated Japan (4-0) in the quarterfinals … However, the USA's chance for a second-consecutive title ended in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to eventual champion Norway on June 15 … The Stars & Stripes rebounded to capture the bronze medal with a 2-0 win over China two days later.June 7, 1962: Mexico became only the second Spanish-speaking CONCACAF nation (first - Cuba in France 1938) to achieve a victory at a FIFA World Cup after defeating Czechoslovakia, 3-1, to conclude Group 3 play (in Chile 1962) at Vina del Mar's Estadio Sausalito … After the Czechs took the lead in the opening minute, the Tricolor answered with goals from Isidoro Diaz (12th), Alfredo Del Aguila (29th) and Hector Hernandez (90th) for the win.
June 8, 2008: Host Guatemala captured its first CONCACAF Futsal Championship by defeating Cuba on penalties (5:3) after a 3-3 draw in the 2008 final at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City … After Oliver Lopez gave the Chapines a 4:3 lead in the penalty shootout, the Leones del Caribe's next kick by Eduardo Morales was saved by goalkeeper Carlos Merida … Then, Jose Rafael Gonzalez sealed the victory with Guatemala's fifth penalty-kick goal … In the third-place encounter, three goals by Matthew Stewart led the USA to a 7-1 win over Panama … Cuba, Guatemala and USA all qualified as the CONCACAF representatives to the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil.
June 9, 1938: Goals by Tomas Fernandez and Hector Socorro led Cuba to a 2-1 win over Romania in a "replay" playoff match at the Stade Municipal in Toulouse, France, during the opening round of the 1934 FIFA World Cup … The extra encounter was required after both teams played to a 3-3 draw four days earlier at the same venue … The Leones del Caribe's victory was the first for a Caribbean team at a FIFA World Cup … Cuba's World Cup run ended on June 12, as it was eliminated by Sweden, 8-0, in the quarterfinals at Antibes' Stade du Fort Carreé.
June 10, 1990: Mexico's Abel Aguilar Elizalde and Henry Landauer of USA were the first CONCACAF Referees to officiate FIFA World Cup matches (Mexico 1970) … Aguilar Elizalde was the man in the middle in the West Germany - Peru (3-1) encounter at Leon's Estadio Nou Camp, while Landauer headed the Sweden - Uruguay (1-0) match at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla.
June 11, 1971: For the first time, a CONCACAF Congress is held in the Caribbean, as Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles (now Curacao) was the venue for the Confederation's second Extraordinary Congress … More than 20 CONCACAF-affiliated national associations attended the event under the chairmanship of President Joaquin Sora Terrazas of Mexico.
June 12, 1983: Mexico's Atlante FC played to a 1-1 draw against host New York Pancyprian-Freedoms of USA in the first-leg of 1983 CONCACAF Champions' Cup Second Round … Mario Hernandez gave Atlante the lead in the 38th minute, but Yotis Papdemetrion tied it for the NY Pancyprian-Freedoms with 25 minutes remaining … Two days later, Atlante won the second-leg in New York City by a score of 3-2 after extra time to advance ... Atlante would go on to eliminate Deportivo Schuitepequez of Guatemala and, then, defeated Surinam's SV Robinhood for its first Champions' Cup crown.
