As part of a year-long commemoration, a weekly feature titled "This Week in CONCACAF History" will take a brief look back at some of the confederation's most historic games and happenings.

Through "This Week in CONCACAF History" you can revisit the region's most memorable people, events and crowning achievements.

May 8-14

May 8, 1985: Goals by Dale Mitchell (14th) and Igor Vrablic (56th) led visiting Canada to a 2-0 win over Haiti at the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince to finish atop the Second Round Group 2 table with seven points (3-0-1 record) at the CONCACAF Campeonato de Naciones (doubled as CONCACAF Qualifying to FIFA World Cup Mexico 1986) … The Maple Leafs went on to capture the confederation title (and FIFA World Cup berth) later in the year after winning the final group that included Costa Rica and Honduras.

May 9, 1993: After missing out on Italy 1990, Mexico qualified for its 10th FIFA World Cup (USA 1994) by defeating host Canada, 2-1, at Toronto's Varsity Stadium to finish first in the final group with 10 points (5-1-0 record) … The Maple Leafs took the lead with a goal by Alex Bunbury (17th), but Hugo Sanchez (35th) and Francisco Javier Cruz (83rd) scored for the Tricolor in the victory.

May 10, 1941: Host Costa Rica opened the inaugural CCCF (Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe Fútbol) Championship with a 7-2 victory over Nicaragua at the Estadio Nacional in San José … The Ticos would then go on to defeat Panama (7-0), Curacao (6-2) and El Salvador (3-1) in the next eight days to win the CCCF title with a perfect 4-0-0 (8 points) in the final group standings.

May 11, 2002: Mexico and USA secured its berths to the inaugural FIFA Under-19 (now U-20) Women's World Cup Canada 2002 after finishing atop their respective CONCACAF Final Round Tournament groups held in Trinidad & TobagoMexico concluded Group A with 2-0-1 record (7 points) following a 5-1 win over the host at Malabar's Larry Gomes Stadium … Meanwhile, the USA defeated Costa Rica, 14-1, at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet for the first-place honors with a perfect 3-0-0 (9 points)

May 12, 2009: Atlante FC captured the first CONCACAF Champions League title after holding visiting CD SC Cruz Azul to a scoreless draw in the second-leg of the All-Mexican Final in Cancún's Estadio Andres Quintana Roo … Atlante FC had won the first-leg of the 2008-09 Final by score of 2-0 at the Estadio Azul in Mexico City.

May 13, 1990: After 41-years, a champion from the North American Zone was crowned as host Canada defeated Mexico, 2-1, in the final match of the three-nation tournament (included USA) at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium … John Catliff scored his second goal of the match with three minutes remaining for the Maple Leafs as they captured their first North American Zone Title after the Tricolor had won the last two held in 1947 and 1949.

May 14, 1992: Mexico defended its CONCACAF Under-20 Championship when it edged the USA on goal difference (+3 to +2) at the conclusion of the final round group at the Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia (Canada) … The final results had Mexico playing to a scoreless draw against Honduras, while the USA defeated Canada 2-1 … It was the Tricolores seventh CONCACAF title and it also qualified them to the 1993 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Australia… The USA also qualified for its fifth FIFA tournament.
