March 6-12
March 6, 2005: Christian Braga scored twice, while Phillip Gyau and Joshua Hill each added a goal, as the USA Beach Soccer Team defeated Argentina, 4-2, in the third-place match at the 2005 North & South American Tournament at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil … The Stars & Stripes were the only CONCACAF team of the three (Canada, Mexico were the others) to reach the semifinals, losing to Uruguay, 5-1, a day earlier … The eight-team tournament doubled as the qualification the inaugural FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup ... Argentina, Uruguay and USA joined host Brazil at the 2005 event.
March 7, 1965: For the 11th time a CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying match ended in a stalemate as the USA played visiting Mexico to a 2-2 tie at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Group 3 First Round play … After Jose Luis Gonzalez (35th) opened the scoring for the Tricolor, the Stars & Stripes took the lead with goals from Walter Schmotolocha (49th) and Helmut Bicek (59th) … Salvador Reyes' penalty kick tied it with 23 minutes remaining as Mexico would go on to claim the group title and reach the final round, where it would qualify for a fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup (England 1966).
March 8, 2006: Reynaldo Parks scored the game-winner five minutes into extra time to give three-time winner Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica a 3-2 victory over visiting Los Angeles Galaxy of the USA in the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup Quarterfinals at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José … Deportivo Saprissa was then eliminated by CD Toluca of Mexico in the semifinals.
March 9, 1976: Mexico's Atlético Español captured the 1975 CONCACAF Champions' Cup after a 2-1 win in the delayed final against host SV Transvaal of Surinam in the second-leg in Paramaribo … Atlético Español had won the first-leg 3-0, two days earlier in the same venue.
March 10, 1963: Germain Champagne, Salomón Santvil and Claude Limagree all scored for the Haitian side Racing Club Haiten in its 3-1 win against host RKV SITHOC of Netherlands Antilles in the first-leg in Willemstad during the 1963 CONCACAF Champions' Cup opening round … Racing Club Haiten completed the home-and-away sweep seven days later with a 1-0 win in Port-au-Prince … Racing Club Haiten would go on to eliminate Xelaju MC of Guatemala in the second round and then became the first Caribbean side to win the Champions' Cup after Mexico's CD Guadalajara withdrew from the final.
March 11, 1976: Guatemala tied host Cuba 1-1 in Havana to conclude the CONCACAF Men's Olympic qualifying competition, a result which gave both teams berths in the Olympic Football Tournament in Montreal, Canada ... Final round group winner Mexico also earned a place … Mexico would make its fifth overall appearance at the Olympic Games in 1976, while for Guatemala and Cuba it would be their second and first, respectively.
March 12, 1991: After a 2-2 draw in the first-leg in Havana a month earlier, three goals from Antonio Teodoro Dos Santos led Mexico's Club América to its third CONCACAF Champions' Cup title, defeating visiting Pinar del Rio of Cuba, 6-0, in the second-leg of the 1990 final (played in 1991) at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
