Week of February 13-19
February 13, 2007: Playing with 10 players for 70 minutes following goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams' ejection, Trinidad & Tobago's W Connection FC triumphed 2-1 over CD Guadalajara of Mexico in the first-leg of the 2007 CONCACAF Champions' Cup quarterfinals at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella … Omar Bravo gave CD Guadalajara the lead in the 61st minute, but W Connection FC responded with goals from Earl Jean and Jose Luiz Seabra in the 80th and 87th minutes, respectively, to ensure the victory, which was the first by a Caribbean team against a Mexican club since the 2002 Champions' Cup.
February 15, 1998: Luis Hernandez scored the only goal of the match (43rd) to lead Mexico to its third consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup crown by defeating the USA, 1-0, in the 1998 final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (USA) … The crowd of 91,255 was the largest for a Gold Cup match held in the USA … Mexico reached the 1998 Gold Cup final behind another game-winner from Hernandez (105th) during extra time in the 1-0 victory over Jamaica three days earlier at the same venue … Meanwhile in the other semifinal, Preki Radosavljevic scored in the 65th minute as the USA earned a spot in the final with an historic 1-0 triumph over Brazil on February 10.
February 17, 1973: After staging its fourth Ordinary Congress two days earlier in Mexico City, Mexico was once again host for a CONCACAF event as the Confederation's third Extraordinary Congress took place … Under the chairmanship of the Confederation President Joaquin Sora Terraza of Mexico, delegates from 25 CONCACAF-affiliated national associations attended the two-day event that was held for the first time in a same location as an Ordinary Congress.
February 18, 2007: Costa Rica claimed its third-consecutive (sixth overall) Copa de Naciones UNCAF (now Copa Centroamericana) title with a 4-1 win on penalty kicks over Panama after a 1-1 draw in the 2007 final at the Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, El Salvador … Luis Tejada gave Panama the lead in the 36th minute, but Kurt Bernard scored the equalizer with five minutes remaining … The Ticos triumphed on penalties with Michael Barrantes, Walter Centeno, Rolando Fonseca and Carlos Hernandez all scoring, while Rolando Escobar had the only goal for the Canaleros as the kicks from Felipe Baloy and Victor Herrera were saved by Costa Rican goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras.
February 19, 1991: Cuba's Pinar del Rio held visiting Club América of Mexico to a 2-2 draw in the first-leg of the 1990 CONCACAF Champions' Cup final at Havana's Estadio Pedro Marrero … Oswaldo Alonso and Osmin Hernandez scored for Pinar del Rio, while Guillermo Huerta and Antonio Teodoro Dos Santos answered for Club América … Águilas would then claim their third CONCACAF crown the following month with a 6-0 triumph over Pinar del Rio in the second-leg at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
