Graham and Mate pass away

CONCACAF President, Jeffrey Webb, expressed his condolences over the death of Bodden Town Football Club footballer Gerome Graham, who passed away on 12 June 2012.

"It is with deep sadness and regret that I express my sincerest condolences to the family of Gerome Graham," said Webb. "Gerome was a valued member of the Bodden Town Football Club and the Cayman Islands National Team and will be deeply missed."

The 20-year-old midfielder collapsed during what was described as a "kick around" at the G. Haig Bodden football field. His team mates tried to resuscitate him, but Graham was pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town.

Graham played for Bodden Town in the 2011 Caribbean Football Union Club Championship. He appeared in both legs of a first-round series against Puerto Rico's River Plate.

On Monday, CONCACAF was informed that former United States National Team member Andrew "Andy" Mate passed away on May 13, 2012, in his native Hungary at the age of 72.

The midfielder played most of career with New York Hungaria SC of the USA's German American Soccer League, leading it to a place in the 1963 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. During the CONCACAF tournament run, Mate became the first American to net a hat-trick on Mexican soil, when he scored all of NY Hungaria's goals in a 3-2 opening-match victory against CD Oro (March 18). It was also the first win by a U.S. club over a Mexican side in a CONCACAF event. With five total goals, Mate completed that competition as joint top scorer with Salomón Santvil, who played with eventual tournament winner Racing Club Haitien of Haiti.
